The blog mentioned above takes on Whiskey on the rocks 25 years ago, the sovjet submarine stranded in Karlskrona, a naval base in the southern part of Sweden.
As a journalist I was therre, I asked the following question during a pressconference at the naval base :
- Do You know if the submarin have nuclear weapon?
All officers and the journalist looked at my as if I where a fool.
A copule of days later it was revelad by our prime minister during one of the most dramatic pressconferences : U 137 had nuclear devices, probably torpedos, or something else, we don´t not know until this day because the Sovets did not allow swedish authorites to inspect the torpedodo room, and this, of course, we accepted as Sweden accepted everything else from the Super Power.
Four years later in Stockholm on a bus from Arlanda down to the capital the destiny or other forces placed me in the bus next to a high ranking naval officer from the swedish general staff. We started talking of submarines and the hunt for sovjets submarines who had going on for 4 years without results. The swedish navy looked more and more lika a joke.
I said to him : I don´t believe in russian submarines any longer, U137 was an accident.
He loooked at me, he know I was a journalist, and said:
- Let me tell You this but remember I have never said what I am going to say now:
- We have had russian submarines in the hair cross, we could have destroyed them within minutes.On one occasion we encircled one submarine, it could not escape. On the phone was prime minister Olof Palme. We asked for permission to open fire.
Palme said : No.
- Do You know why?
- No.
- If a sovjet submarine was hit by us in the vicinity of Stockholm and it had nuclear devices onboard, there would pe panic. What to do with nuclear bombs 80 meter on the bottom of The Baltic?
- It is simple, we know where they where, we could do nothing.
- That was the message from U137.
- What did U137 do in Karlskrona?
- They intended to place nuclear devices on swedish territory and got it wrong.
- Bu we had no war with Sovjet?
- No. And the sovjets never want a war with us, hence the nuclerar devices. They hold the trigger at our head. Nuclear bombs means no war. A little switch in Moscow and booom in Sweden.
